“Sir, I am a murderer.” She was trembling while saying this; fear of the unknown written all over her face. She was sitting in our police station, opposite to my table. She was there to surrender herself. I was the in charge of the police station as the other constables had gone for a routine check round the city highways.
She was a beautiful lady of about twenty-two or twenty-three years. She had long hairs, which were maintained really nicely, and wore a pink shirt and dark blue Denim jeans. She also had sunglasses on her eyes to grace her beauty. She had the look of someone from a nice and rich family.
“Who did you killed?” I managed to ask her after taking a long pause because her first sentence was not really expected – I have been used to the incessant report of petty robbery and burglary. But her straight confession really threw me off balance. – Or if I talk frankly, I might have been lost in her beauty.
“I have killed three people.” I could not believe my ears until I looked round to confirm that I was still in the police station. I was really surprised to hear that: a girl, so pretty, can kill three people and also confessing it in front of a police officer. The whole thing was a bit unusual for me: so out of this world.
“I have killed my Gardner, my driver and ….” She paused a bit and started to sob. “And my mother.” She started crying really hard. I gave her a glass of water and she started to sip from it.
When she was able to control her emotions, she continued to talk. “Please I beg of you, please arrest me, otherwise I will continue to kill.”
“Why did you kill them and why will you kill others? Mam………. What’s your name?” I really don’t know where to start from. Not that I’ve not handled a murder case before but I’ve not heard of a culprit of such crime, in his/her right senses, come to the police station to turn him/herself in. But I sensed a great deal of urgency in the case at hand.
“Sophia.” She was still sobbing.
“Sophia, why did you kill them?”
“I don’t know. It just happened. I can’t even imagine I could do something like this. “She said as she struggled to control her tears.
“Sophia, I am not getting this. Besides, I cannot arrest you without any formal complaint and without seeing the body of the dead people you are talking about.” She was looking very tense to me. So I continued, “Sophia, where are the bodies?”
“I have buried them in my garden.” I noticed a slight shift in her composure which I could have taken to mean that she’s holding something back on a normal day. But I ignored it as some constables had now joined me at the desk.
I decided to go to her house, taking two constables along with me. When we reached her house she took us to her garden and showed us the places where the bodies of the gardener and driver were. I instructed the constables to exhume the bodies.
“Where’s the body of your mother?” I asked Sophia having noticed that there appear to be only two graves in the garden.
“Inside the house.” she replied sharply as she turned to lead the way into the house.
I started to follow Sophia as she led the way into the house. After a short while, stopped in front of a dark room.
“Inside” She said, pointing to the room. “My mother is lying inside.” She started to cry again.
I slowly started to move inside the room. The room was so dark that it was difficult to see anything. I had a torch with me so I decided to turn that on. I searched the whole room but the room was empty. Then I saw another room which was closed.
I opened the room and was shocked to see that there were three bodies lying on the floor inside the room. The two men may be Sophia’s gardener and driver and one old lady may be her mother. ‘But she told me that the two men were buried in the garden and she even showed us their graves.” I was wondering why Sophia brought me this deep into the house. “Could this be a trap? Or did she want to play on my intelligence?”
Suddenly, I felt something plunge into my body through my back. I reached out my hand to the place and was startled when I saw blood – my own blood- trickling down my fingers. Someone stabbed me from behind. I turned around. I was shocked to see Sophia, smiling desperately, standing with a knife in her right hand dripping with blood.
“Why?” I asked her in a trembling voice.
She came closer, stabbed me in the stomach and said, “Because, it’s fun.”
Before I could do anything, she reached out for my gun in a speed of lightening. She rushed outside and fired two shots. I knew that the constables were as good as dead. I fell on the ground helplessly like a defeated lion.
“Good afternoon sir” A voice called and brought me back to the office: it’s been all a dream. I had slept off right inside the office, at my duty post. Someone has just knocked on my desk to make a complaint. But looking up, behold, it is Sophia I have seen in my dream……
